Onam

Yesterday, we celebrated a Malayali festival called Onam. The celebration comes from the legend of King Mahabali, a deceased king who comes back to Kerala once a year. This feast is held in his honor. You can read more about the legend here. Although many do not necessarily believe in this story we didn't mind an excuse to celebrate. We ate a meal consisting of rice, sambar (a watery vegetable mix), papadam (big chip-like thing), tomato chutney, more vegetables and payasam for dessert. I ate my food off of a huge banana leaf. It's pretty awesome to play with food and eating off a gigantic leaf made it even more so.

ah yes, good ole memories. Did you feed your plate/leaf to a cow once you were done with your lunch ;-)

Well..that's a good question because it was a high possibility for that since the cows live about 5 feet from the cafeteria, but I left that up to the paid workers around here. ;)

Cool Heather! While Amar and I were in India, we visited Mahabalipuram...similar name to the king you mentioned. Very nifty :)
